I heard this poem by Emily Dickinson today on NPR as they discussed the possibility of Dickinson having epilepsy.

While I have no interest in the book (why can’t a great poet just be great, leave it alone and read a contemporary poet), the text seems rather fitting for me right now. Lately I am torn between the words of the popular culture I teach and the artistic culture I prefer. At the same time, I feel my self being pulled more and more every day to the art community and bored by the stagnation of the musical world.

I think this is where my new album begins:

I felt a Cleaving in my Mind—
As if my Brain had split—
I tried to match it—Seam by Seam—
But could not make them fit.

The thought behind, I strove to join
Unto the thought before—
But Sequence raveled out of Sound
Like Balls—upon a Floor.

ca. 1854

BMI and ASCAP are attempting to receive royaltiesf or the 30 Second Sample you listen to when you preview a song. Link HERE

Read that again…

Now, don’t get me wrong, I tend to support BMI and ASCAP in various ways, but this is just ridiculous. Royalties to PREVIEW a song. The problem here is to complicated to get into:

1. Who pays for the preview? Us? Apple? Record Companies? Which means prices go up

2. Its a PREVIEW. Its like going to Borders and having to pay a tax to flip through a book or read the back cover of a magazine you MAY purchase

3. How else are we to hear new and different music? Clear channel owns everything, so we can’t go to the radio, TV is no help, shows are great if you live in a major city.. I could ssay more, but you get the idea…

4. From the article

“We make 9.1 cents off a song sale and that means a whole lot of pennies have to add up before it becomes a bunch of money,” said Rick Carnes, president of the Songwriters’ Guild of America. “Yesterday, I received a check for 2 cents. I’m not kidding. People think we’re making a fortune off the Web, but it’s a tiny amount. We need multiple revenue streams or this isn’t going to work.”

Ok… did you think about that before you signed your life away to a record company? That’s called the fine print… I suggest you, as the president of SGA give that a read sometime.

5. ASCAP and BMI get paid based on “the use of a work.” So, if you want to use a work, you should have to pay to see if you want to use it… before you pay to use it. Nutz.

The article also mentions streaming audio on the iTunes Radio… Thats trick, and I am not as bitter about that… so no rant here…

This has to stop… everyone’s “I have to get mine” is insane… too angry to continue…

ProTools now comes bundled with various hardware configurations; with a mic, with a keyboard, and with a USB interface. Not bad to get you started. What seems to be the most annoying problem is that the hardware you use serves as the iLok key, and therefore it must be attached to use the software. Still, pretty good to start, though I prefer Reaper

They mention some very important things, most importantly, I feel, is the discussion of the Fan Pyramid. This concept is rather imprtant to those just getting started in the biz. For example, do you own full albums of every song you own, or just the one download. That’s what I thought…
